*Capoeira is an African-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It was developed in Brazil at the beginning of the 16th century by enslaved Africans seeking to win their liberation. It is known for its quick and complex maneuvers, predominantly using intelligence, guile, strength, speed, and leverage across a wide variety of kicks, spins, flips and other techniques.
The roda is a circle formed by capoeira players and musical instruments, where every participant sings songs and claps their hands following the music. Two capoeira players enter the roda and play the game according to the style required by the musical rhythm.
Our not-for-profit program Capoeira Life is fiscally sponsored by Shunpike.
Shunpike is the 501(c)(3) non-profit agency that provides independent arts groups in Washington State with the services, resources, and opportunities they need to forge their own paths to sustainable success.
